SYNOPSIS: "LILY, TEXAS"
"Lily, Texas" is a film about a young gay jewish woman from a small town in Texas. Lily recounts in this tale how she grew up liking women, but didn’t feel she could engage in a relationship until she left Texas to study abroad at Oxford. In the meantime, she has returned to Texas and has started a job as a school teacher, before suddenly being outed by someone in the community. The townspeople are outraged at one of their teachers being gay, and proceed to force her dismissal. However, that is not by far the worst of things. Her parents and sister, who are immediately notified by the school, are orthodox Jewish. As homosexuality cannot be tolerated under their belief system, they proceed to sit shiva, the mourning for the dead, for seven days and seven nights. In a series of wrenching family scenes, Lily goes from being a normal family member to a non-existent entity in their world. Having lost everything back home, Lily is forced to leave. She drives accross country, partly in shock, partly still reminiscing about her recent love relationship at Oxford. When she arrives in Philadelphia, she seeks refuge with an old friend, and recounts the emotional turmoil she has gone through, the nightmares and the memories, as she was being expelled from her family and rendered into oblivion.
